In The Everyday Language of White Racism, Jane H. Hill provides an incisive analysis of everyday language to reveal the underlying racist stereotypes that continue to circulate in American culture.

provides a detailed background on the theory of race and racism
reveals how racializing discourse—talk and text that produces and reproduces ideas about races and assigns people to them—facilitates a victim-blaming logic
integrates a broad and interdisciplinary range of literature from sociology, social psychology, justice studies, critical legal studies, philosophy, literature, and other disciplines that have studied racism, as well as material from anthropology and sociolinguistics
Part of the Blackwell Studies in Discourse and Culture Series

   Review

"Recommended [to] Most levels/libraries." (CHOICE, November 2009)

"Resonating far beyond its focus on the US, this is a lucid, compelling, committed and highly original account of the fundamental aspects of routine language that help racism thrive amidst its everyday denial."
–Professor Ben Rampton, King's College London

"The Everyday Language of White Racism is an extremely important book. Jane Hill raises readers' awareness for the potential danger which confronts all of us; i.e. that 'race' and racially based practices which are frequently expressed in indirect and covert ways would become part of common sense and thus essentialized. This is also a very timely book because it points us to the many instances in everyday life where discrimination still occurs and proposes ways how to challenge social exclusion."
–Ruth Wodak, Distinguished Professor of Discourse Studies, Lancaster University

"Hill's academic credentials give her the authority to write this disquieting book. The care she uses to make her case will compel even skeptics to reconsider the way they speak about other people."
–Otto Santa Ana, University of California, Los Angeles

"For the many Americans who believe that racism is on the decline in the contemporary United States, The Everyday Language of White Racism will be both eye-opening and thought-provoking. Challenging the commonsense belief that racism is rooted in individual, intentional feelings of hatred or prejudice, Jane Hill shows that racism is produced through language in which racist stereotypes circulate, whether deliberately, unwittingly, or somewhere in between. Hill’s magisterial command of a wide range of scholarship provides rich theoretical and political context for her acute analyses of racist language in the media, public discourse, and private talk. The result is an engaging and important discussion of the enduring yet often invisible presence of racism in American daily life."
–Mary Bucholtz, Department of Linguistics, University of California, Santa Barbara

The true racists in current society are the blacks.
I agree with that. And I tire of it.
@wonderwang : wow, you really need to read this book you fool.
I am tired of hearing these false claims that racism is still a major problem in America. I don't think it is. But I do think that there are people that WANT it to be a problem because it serves their own self interests. Stop whining and compete in society on your own ability rather than entitlements that are not warranted. Remember, the world doesn't owe ANY of us anything! Get over ii!!
arch150: How convenient (and arrogant) of you to say that as you are likely speaking from self-interest. And honestly, I don't give a damn, neither does anyone else about your poor little feelings. This isn't about you for a change. It is about the ones who *do* experience this daily, from people like you, and who suffer for years under this.
If you want to look at the other side of the equation, and get out of the rosy little comfort bubble, then take a look at

Tell the Jewish people to "get over" the Holocaust, or the Palestinians to "get over" Israel's behaviour in West Bank. Or Russia to "get over" Germany's invasion in WW2, or any American to "get over" Pearl Harbor, or 9-11, or a grieving parent to get over Sandy Hook. Or a veteran to "get over" whichever war they served in. If you wouldn't dare say these things to them, how in the *fuck* do you have the audacity to say that to me?
He has the right to say that to you because in 1965 the USA officially eliminated all racism everywhere in the country, and all white people endorsed that action completely. The only thing whites now ask of blacks in return for this supreme act of generosity is to take 100% responsibility for all aspects of their situation in life as of the moment that racism was wiped out. Gee, that's not so much to ask, is it?

College Commies are worse than Islamists. Marxism is the religion of European self-hate.

The fact is its true....everything is always someone elses fault...they NEVER do anything wrong.

Just look at the ranting from the Trayvon Martin apologists... A black is allowed to assault someone..they believe and the victim isn't entitled to fight back.

Sorry but I see too much of this every day where I live with my own eyes and hear it with my own ears.

What a certain fraction of the blacks are doing today is absolutely no different that what a certain fraction of the whites did decades ago....

And incidentally....I view the Back racists exactly the same as the White supremacists, or the Latino extremists...

The only thing different between them is the color of their skin. Inside they all think they are superior to everyone else.
The sad fact of the matter is that I have never heard of or witnessed any black person ever turn down something given to them because they are black. Now this still discrimination in the general sense but it's ok with them since they are getting something because they are black.
And I see quite a few black people (not all) behaving just as badly as some white people. The difference is that black people behaving like animals conveniently blame white people. They are still held accountable, however, they don't accept their own accountability as a result of their own actions. See, to them, not me, their actions are always because of the white man holding them back in life. This is pure and utter bullcrap.
And yes if the world is to be a better place racism needs to stop. But racism is by far not as bad as it once was in USA. So when I say get over it I mean that to progress as human beings we need to stop holding on to the past and move forward! And I am not racist, just very observant of my surroundings where I live!!
blackatk: By the way what I said has nothing to do with the holocaust or the palestinians or my feelings either. what this has to do with is the way black people act and then try to pas it off as their "culture" or the white man's fault. You should really try to stay on topic and not try to paint me as just another bad racist.
arch150: so now you are trying to paint yourself as a " good racist" ? I don't need the fake benevolence. You cannot generalize or blame an entire people based on the bad actions of a few. There are good people and bad, race is simply one factor in the equation of a person's interests/intentions/personality. Furthermore, it's easy for you to say "move on" aka "get in your place" however that is not your place to say. You are also arguing using arguments which I see so often, I can just refer you to the standard answer, as your assertions cannot be taken seriously.
Thank you blackatk for sharing your insight with the ignorant. White America needs a reminder that things are NOT better today than it used to be.
MAGIC_HATE_BALL : thx for noticing..
